Civic Chains of Office

Since 1881, Dominion Regalia has been working with municipalities all across Canada to provide products and ideas for Civic Pride Programs. To help meet the need for civic identification, recognition and downtown improvement programs, we have developed a complete range of products to address those needs. Should you have any questions regarding these products or services, please give us a call. We are ready to help.
In medieval times, perhaps even earlier, a simple but sturdy chain from which was suspended the official seal of the community was worn about the neck of the Chief Magistrate, whose sworn duty was to protect at all costs this precious instrument of civic legality.

Today the Chain of Office incorporating the civic badge, armorial bearings or coat of arms is recognized by all as a symbol of the dignity, authority and responsibility inherent in the principal elective municipal office. A Chain of Office demands careful attention to the minutest details of design, selection of materials and construction.
Designs may be grouped into two categories. The first, and less costly design, comprises a number of bars and emblems connected by links into an oval shape. The emblems may be maple leaves, National or Provincial Arms, etc. The second consists of a variety of emblems, possibly in colour, denoting local history, resources, and industry.
The selection of material requires experience counsel for it does not necessarily hold true that the most costly materials are the most suitable. Precious metals such as gold and silver are used in Dominion Regalia Chain Collars but only where warranted. Generally, a variety of metals are used. Despite the quality and durability of the materials, out collars are relatively light in weight.

Take a look at the examples of medallions and chain collars we have produced over the years for various municipal offices and see how we can enhance your civic pride and honour.
In 1998 Dominion Regalia was presented with a challenge; to design and construct a new Chain of Office for the newly amalgamated Toronto, comprised of five former municipalities and the former City of Toronto.
The result is a stunning masterpiece of civic pride and history depicting beautifully crafted coats of arms from each municipality, as well as Canada’s National Arms, Ontario’s Provincial Arms, and finished with a newly designed City of Toronto Coat of Arms golden medallion.
